OPP 1. Doc
Women – World Peacemakers for the 21st Century
Submitted by: WILPF
US, Women & Cuba National Campaign
1. What is the
project proposal about:
The current international crisis, especially
in relationship to the worldwide "War on Terrorism," demands
that women assert their roles as peace keepers to develop just and peaceful
international relations amongst the people of the world. WILPF International
will call for an international peace conference in 2006 with this mission.
While international in scope, the conference will have a particular focus
on the Americas. The conference will take place in Havana, Cuba in order
to highlight the 44-year old war of terrorism that the U.S. has waged
against the Cuban people. We envision the conference involving potentially
several hundred women and lasting approximately four days. We will use
the conference to highlight the advances of Cuban women in their struggle
for equality and how the Cuban people are showing that "another world
is possible" through their advances in healthcare, education and
technology. Women from the Americas, and around the world, can learn from
the experiences of the Cubans, share their own, and work to develop strategies
for change.
2. Objectives:
Education:
To increase awareness of the disproportional impact of war on women; to
become more informed about the positive history of women crossing borders
to make peace and refusing to be separated by national barriers; to highlight
and continue WILPF’s role in bringing diverse women together
Networking:
To provide an opportunity for women from around the world to share stories
and make connections across movements and borders that will strengthen
the worldwide women’s movement; to involve women government officials
with grassroots leaders (perhaps UN involvement, local Cuban officials,
EU reps, US Congress, etc…think Beijing 1995)
Leadership Development:
To increase the prominence of women in policymaking as mandated in UN
Resolution 1325, by sharing strategies and tactics used around the world,
with a particular focus on women in the Americas
Policy Change:
To change policies that perpetuate division and injustice by mobilizing
women from many nations
Media/Public Information:
To achieve a solid action plan to work toward amplifying women’s
voices in all media and public information
